Associate Professor, Pharmaceutical Sciences Pharmaceutical Sciences Phone: (210) 883-1078 Email: pcarvalh@uiwtx.eduDr. Paulo Carvalho worked for 8 years as a compounding pharmacist in Brazil before deciding to go back to school for his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry. Afterwards, he served as a post-doctoral fellow and research scientist at the University of Mississippi before accepting a position teaching Medicinal Chemistry at Notre Dame of Maryland University for 7 years until June of 2016, when he came to Feik School of Pharmacy.
Dr. Carvalho’s research interests are the synthesis of enzymatic inhibitors against tropical diseases, Natural Products chemistry, and development of methods for the identification and quantification of drugs and their metabolites in biological fluids. He published papers in the areas of synthetic, computational and analytical chemistry and established collaborations nationally and internationally. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and the Rho Chi Society, and is part of the editorial board of the journal Medicinal Chemistry Research.
Dr Carvalho has mentored undergraduate and Pharmacy students in medicinal/organic chemistry research, taught several courses in Pharmacotherapeutics, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Calculations, Organic Chemistry, was voted Teacher of the Year for 2014/15 and received the Provost’s Legacy Teaching Award 2018/19. His philosophy of teaching is based on him being, as he defines himself, “a curious person”. His relationship with students in the classroom and in the laboratory is geared towards sharing, awakening that same curiosity so they can also go on learning for themselves, being curious as to how to better themselves and the lives they touch.
On a personal level, Dr. Carvalho enjoys nature, camping, reading, listening to classical music (especially Medieval and Baroque) and building/fixing things around the house.
