Jorge L. Medina, PhD

Assistant Professor, Pharmaceutical Sciences

Dr. Jorge L. Medina is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.  He joined the University of the Incarnate Word, Feik School of Pharmacy in the spring of 2019.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Texas A&M University, at College Station and his Master of Science in Biology from UTSA. He then went on to complete a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.  Dr. Medina continued his training by completing a post-doctoral fellowship at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research.

As part of his experience Dr. Medina worked in diagnostic microbiology and biomedical research.  These experiences led him to pursue his Ph.D. studies, where Dr. Medina examined the role of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in respiratory disease and in the exacerbation of allergic asthma.   He continued his training by completing a post-doctoral fellowship focused on elucidating the underlying mechanisms of scar formation following a severe burn and evaluating new treatments to prevent scar formation. His research interests include allergic inflammation, asthma and wound healing. 

Dr. Medina is driven by a desire to see his students succeed both in and out of the classroom.  He is excited to be a faculty member of the learner-centered environment in the Feik School of Pharmacy and to contribute to the social justice mission of UIW.  Dr. Medina values family above all else.  His family includes his wife, Yesemia Garza-Medina, daughter Graciela Medina and son Benjamin Medina.
