Matthew C. Valdez PhD

NIH Post Doctoral Fellow

Matthew C. Valdez attended The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) where he graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry and a minor in Biology. He continued his studies at UTSA earning his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 2020 while working under Dr. Stanton F. McHardy at the Center for Innovative Drug Discovery.

Dr. Valdez is currently an NIH Post-Doctoral Fellow in Medicinal Chemistry in Dr. Paulo Carvalho’s laboratory at UIW’s Feik School of Pharmacy and is a visiting research fellow at the Center for Innovative Drug Discovery. He is currently working on the synthesis and optimization of artemisinin analogs at its C-7&10 positions to treat malaria and cancer. Dr. Valdez’s research interests include organic synthesis, drug design, biocatalysts, and chemical biology (specifically its applications in the elucidation of unknown biological mechanisms). He is the author of multiple peer-reviewed publications in the fields of organic and medicinal chemistry. He is also listed as co-inventor on several patents.
